The First 5K Novel Prize

The First 5K Novel Prize is a novel-writing competition hosted by Writers Online and Writing Magazine, published by Warners Group Publications. It is open to writers of unpublished novel manuscripts in any fiction genre aimed at adult or young adult readers.

Entrants submit the first 5,000 words of their manuscript along with a one-page synopsis. Entries must be original, unpublished in any form, and written in English.

Entrants must not be represented by a literary agent. Writers who have previously self-published or been traditionally published may enter, provided the submitted manuscript is unpublished. There is no limit to the number of entries.

The winner receives £5,000 and a consultation with Piers Blofeld, literary agent at Sheil Land Associates. The runner-up receives £500 and a consultation with Monica Chakraverty, editorial director at Cornerstones Literary Consultancy. Shortlisted writers receive a 12-month Writers Online Membership, and longlisted writers receive a 12-month Writers Online membership.

A longlist of around 15 entrants will be announced by 28 February 2027, a shortlist of six by 31 March, and the winners on 1 May 2027. Subscribers to Writing Magazine and Writers Online members pay a reduced fee of £24.
