Farnham’s First Five is a novel-opening competition hosted by Farnham Literary Festival. The competition invites the first 5,000 words of an adult fiction novel. The novel does not need to be finished.
Entrants submit up to 5,000 words from the start of their novel. A 250-word synopsis summarising the main plot goes on the first page, and it is not counted in the word limit. The competition is open to unpublished writers aged 18 and over. Self-published writers may enter, but the submitted work must not have been published anywhere.
First place wins The Paris Prize for Fiction, worth £1,000 and a critique. The prize is sponsored by bestselling author B.A. Paris. Second place receives £300, and third place receives £200.
The longlist will be announced on 12 February 2027 and the shortlist on 26 February 2027. Results will be announced at an award ceremony at Farnham Town Hall on 14 March 2027.
