The African Diaspora Award is an annual writing competition hosted by Kinsman Quarterly, a literary journal published by Kinsman Avenue Publishing. The 2027 award is the fourth edition of the competition. It seeks writing on themes related to African culture or subculture. Suggested themes include cultural history, family dynamics, customs, spirituality, myths and beliefs, cultural art, community challenges and Afrofuturism.
Entrants may submit a short story of 500 to 3,000 words, a creative nonfiction piece of up to 1,500 words, or a poetry collection of three to six poems (up to seven pages). Work must be original, unpublished and written in English. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but work should be withdrawn if accepted elsewhere.
The competition is open to writers aged 18 and over. Writers of African descent are preferred, but entry is not limited to them.
The grand prize winner receives $1,000 and publication in Kinsman Quarterly and the 2027 anthology, Africa’s Diaspora: The Four Corners. The first runner-up receives $200 and the second runner-up receives $100, both with publication. The top three placements include writers from each genre, who then compete for the grand prize. The top six shortlisted finalists receive a $25 Amazon gift card and publication. All longlisted finalists are eligible for publication in the anthology and a complimentary Kindle copy.
Copyright remains with the authors. Winners and finalists are asked to wait one year after the announcement before republishing their work.
