The Wild Atlantic Writing Awards (WAWA) are a writing competition hosted by Ireland Writing Retreat. The competition has two categories: flash fiction and creative nonfiction. This year’s theme is the phrase “We/I knew this day would come.”
Entrants submit a story of up to 500 words. Flash fiction entries can be in any genre, including sci-fi, crime, romance, horror, humour, thriller and mystery. Creative nonfiction entries must be true stories and can take any form, including memoir, profile, literary journalism, personal essay, culture, travel or food writing.
The competition is open to writers worldwide. Entries must be in English. Both unpublished and previously published work are accepted. Multiple entries are allowed.
The winner in each category receives €500 in cash or a voucher worth €1,000 towards any Ireland Writing Retreat retreat in 2027. Winners and finalists receive award certificates. With the writer’s permission, the top ten stories in each category are published on the Ireland Writing Retreat website.
Winners will be announced in January 2027.
