The Orwell Society Dystopian Fiction Award

The Orwell Society Dystopian Fiction Award is an annual short story competition hosted by The Orwell Society, a registered charity that promotes the life and works of George Orwell. The competition seeks dystopian narratives that follow a set theme. The theme for 2027 is “morality.”

The competition is open only to students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or master’s degree at a recognised university in the United Kingdom. Students of any subject may enter. PhD students, alumni and prospective students are not eligible.

Stories can be up to 3,000 words. Entries must be unpublished and must not have been posted online. Work that has been longlisted or shortlisted elsewhere without winning a prize is eligible.

The winner receives £750, and the winning story is published in The Orwell Society’s Journal. The runner-up receives a non-cash prize. The judging panel includes Richard Blair, George Orwell’s son and Patron of The Orwell Society.

The shortlist will be announced on 19 April 2027. The award will be presented on 8 May 2027 at The Orwell Society AGM in London.
