Event Details
The Moth Poetry Prize is an international poetry competition hosted by The Moth, an Irish arts and literature magazine. It is one of the largest prizes in the world for individual unpublished poems. Each year it receives thousands of entries from new and established poets in more than 50 countries.
Entries can be on any subject and of any length. Poems must be written in English and must never have been published, self-published, published online or broadcast. Collections are not accepted. English translations are eligible if the translator has permission and the author and translator agree to share any prize money. The prize is open to anyone aged 16 or over. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, and there is no limit on the number of entries. Entries can be made online or by post.
The 2026 judge is Diane Seuss, winner of the Pulitzer Prize. She reads all poems anonymously.
The first prize is €6,000. Three runner-up prizes of €1,000 and eight commended prizes of €250 are also awarded. The four shortlisted poems are published in the Irish Times online. The shortlist is announced in March, and the overall winner is announced at an online award ceremony in the spring.
