The Story Unlikely Annual Short Story Contest is a free-to-enter competition hosted by Story Unlikely, a monthly literary magazine. The contest is open to all genres. Fiction and nonfiction are both accepted, including fantasy, science fiction and memoir.
Stories must be previously unpublished and no longer than 5,000 words. Entrants must be 18 or older. Each author may submit one story.
Entries are judged on technical and literary quality and on storytelling ability. The $4,000 prize package is split into $2,500 for first place, $1,000 for second and $500 for third. All three winning stories are published in the monthly issue and on the Story Unlikely website. They are also professionally illustrated and included in the magazine’s annual full-colour print anthology.
Winners are notified by 31 May, and winning stories are published between June and December of the following year.
