Event Details
The McNeile Writing Competition is organised by Clapham Writers, a South West London writing charity, in honour of the late Penelope McNeile. Run in association with the Clapham Book Festival, it is open to unpublished and self-published writers of all levels, celebrating creativity, diversity, and emerging literary voices.
Entrants must submit an original, previously unpublished opening section of a short story responding to the theme “Absent Friends“. The theme may be interpreted broadly, encompassing ideas of memory, loss, distance, reunion, nostalgia, or the enduring presence of those no longer with us. Submissions must be a maximum of 1,000 words or two paragraphs, whichever is the shorter.
The competition is open to residents of the United Kingdom only. Entries are judged by a panel of published authors appointed by Clapham Writers. Winners are announced at the Clapham Book Festival on 17 October 2026. Authors retain copyright; winners and shortlisted entrants may have their work published or promoted in connection with the competition, with full credit given.
First prize is £200, with second and third prizes of £50 each.
