Flash 500 Novel Opening & Synopsis Competition

The Novel Opening & Synopsis Competition is run by Flash 500, the UK-based writing competition platform. It invites published, self-published, and unpublished novelists to submit the opening of an unpublished novel alongside a compelling synopsis, and is judged by the editorial team at Bookouture, the digital-first commercial fiction publisher.

Entrants submit up to 3,000 words of their novel opening — which may be one or more chapters — together with a synopsis of no more than 750 words, in a single file. If a first chapter runs longer than 3,000 words, the entry should be closed within the word limit with a note that the chapter continues.

The competition is open to writers worldwide and welcomes simultaneous submissions, provided entrants notify Flash 500 if their work is accepted elsewhere. An optional paid critique of the entry and synopsis is available for an additional £35.

First prize is £500 and second prize is £200.
