Bristol Short Story Prize

The Bristol Short Story Prize is an annual international short story competition hosted by the University of Bristol. It was established in 2007.

Stories can be on any theme or subject. All styles are welcome, including graphic, verse and genre fiction such as crime, science fiction, fantasy, historical, horror, romance and children’s.

Entries must be no more than 4,000 words. There is no minimum length. Stories must be written in English and must not have been previously published in print or online, including on blogs and social media. Entrants must be over 16 on the closing date.

The first prize is £1,500, with £500 for second place and £250 for third. The remaining 12 shortlisted writers each receive £50. All 15 shortlisted stories are published in the Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 19, and each shortlisted author receives a free paperback copy.

A pool of 250 free entries is available to writers for whom the fee is a barrier. Entries are judged anonymously, and winners are announced at the University of Bristol’s Writers’ Day in summer 2027.
