The Writer’s Digest Personal Essay Awards is an annual personal essay competition hosted by Writer’s Digest magazine. This year’s top winners are chosen by Special Guest Judge William Kenower, Editor-in-Chief of Author magazine.
Entries must be original personal essays of 2,000 words or fewer, written in English, and not previously published in print, digital, or online publications. Self-published blog or social-media posts are allowed. Entrants must be 18 or older. Grand-prize winners from this or other Writer’s Digest competitions are ineligible for three years after winning.
The grand prize winner receives $2,500 in cash, an interview and published essay feature in Writer’s Digest magazine’s May/June 2027 issue and on WritersDigest.com, a paid trip to the Writer’s Digest Annual Conference including a pitch session with editors or agents, a one-year Writer’s Digest subscription, and a 20% discount at Writer’s Digest University. Second place receives $1,000, third place $500.
Winners will be notified by December 31, 2026.
