Event Details
The When Things Fall Apart Travel Writing Competition is run by Intrepid Times, a London-based travel writing publication now in its 13th competition. The contest invites writers to submit true travel stories exploring the theme of disrupted plans and unexpected improvisation — the moments when travel goes wrong and what those experiences reveal about a place and the traveller themselves.
Entrants must submit an original, previously unpublished true travel story of 1,800–2,500 words written in response to the theme. Stories are judged by the Intrepid Times editorial team on the strength of their narrative, precision of language, and emotional impact.
The competition is open worldwide to writers aged 18 and over. Entry is free, though writers may optionally workshop their submission as part of the paid Craft of Travel Writing Certificate course running in April 2026.
The winner receives $500 USD – the publication’s most generous prize to date. Up to four runners-up may also be accepted for publication at the standard writer’s fee.
