The Solstice Nature Prize for Young Writers

The Solstice Nature Prize for Young Writers is a national, annual writing competition hosted by Writing East Midlands. It invites young writers to explore the natural world, their relationship with it, or the challenges it faces. The event is free to enter.

Entrants submit one short story, blog, or poem responding to the theme of nature, the environment, or climate change. Short stories and blogs are limited to 500 words and poems to 40 lines. Work must be original, unpublished, and not previously placed in another national competition.

There are four age categories (7-11, 12-14, 15-17 and 18-25). Entrants under the age of 18 need the consent of a parent, teacher, or appropriate adult.

Entry is open to UK residents only. UK residents currently living overseas cannot enter.

First-place winners in each age category receive £100 in Amazon vouchers and publication. Five Highly Commended writers per category receive a goody bag and publication online.

Winners are announced on 21 December 2026.
