Event Details
The Asian Voices in Children’s Literature Writing Contest is sponsored by Free Spirit Publishing (an imprint of Teacher Created Materials) and Sambasivan & Parikh, a women-owned small press amplifying diasporic perspectives in children’s literature. In its inaugural year, the contest invites authors of Asian heritage to submit original, unpublished children’s book manuscripts that feature authentic characters of Asian heritage and connect to the writer’s personal experience.
Entries may be submitted in one of two age-group categories: picture books for ages 0–4 (50–125 words) or for ages 4–8 (300–1,000 words). Stories should focus on themes such as resilience, identity, self-esteem, family, and community. Fantasy elements, chapter books, and standalone poetry or essays are not eligible. Only one entry per person is accepted.
Three cash prizes are awarded from a total prize pool of $1,800. Every entry is considered for publication. The First Place winner receives $1,000 cash plus a publisher meeting and serious consideration for publication by Free Spirit, co-branded with Sambasivan & Parikh.
