Event Details
The Nature Writing Prize is organised by The Nature Conservancy Australia in partnership with Australian Book Review. Now in its eighth instalment, the prize invites Australian writers to help bring the wonder, beauty and fragility of nature to life through storytelling – deepening our collective appreciation for the natural world and inspiring more people to care about its future.
The 2026 theme is “Writing of place”, inviting writers to create essays that reveal the beauty, complexity, and significance of specific landscapes or environments. Entries should demonstrate how storytelling can deepen connections with nature and inspire greater understanding of environmental challenges.
The competition is open to nature writers from around the world. Winning essays will be published in the January/February 2027 issue of Australian Book Review.
Top prize: $8,000 and publication in Australian Book Review. A highly commended writer will receive the Rosina Joy Buckman Award of $1,000.
