The Waterman Fund Emerging Writers Essay Contest 2026 is organised by Waterman Fund in partnership with Appalachia journal, a U.S.-based nonprofit that supports emerging writers.
The contest invites writers to submit essays addressing topics related to the natural living world, land and place, preservation/conservation, alpine ecosystems, and wilderness. Submissions must be original, unpublished essays written in English between 1,000–3,000 words. The competition is open internationally to emerging writers (those who have not published a major work of fiction or narrative nonfiction on wilderness/environmental topics). Winning essays are published in Appalachia journal.
Prize: $3,000 for first place and $1,000 for runner-up, plus publication in Appalachia journal.
