The To Hull And Back Humorous Short Story Competition is a biennial contest run by author Christopher Fielden, now in its 10th edition. It invites writers worldwide to submit an original humorous short story in English, with no restriction on genre or theme beyond containing some element of humour. Stories may have been previously published elsewhere.
Entrants may submit up to three stories each, though only one cash prize can be won per author. Stories are read and shortlisted, then scored independently by a panel of up to ten judges.
Alongside the £1,000 top prize, £200 goes to second place, £100 to third, £70 each to three highly commended entries, and £35 each to fourteen shortlisted entries, for a total prize pot of £2,000. All winning and shortlisted stories are published in the To Hull And Back Anthology (print and Kindle), with author profiles and, for the winner, a published interview. The anthology is expected 31 October 2027, with the “ride to Hull” video following in spring 2028.
