The Grant for Writing on Sculpture is organized by the Jonathan and Barbara Silver Foundation and supports writers whose work deepens public understanding of sculpture. The foundation funds projects that demonstrate rigorous research, critical insight, and strong literary quality, whether scholarly or accessible to a broad readership.
The grant is open to writers working on projects focused on sculpture, including essays, books, criticism, or other substantial pieces of writing. Both emerging and established writers may apply. Projects should be in progress and clearly related to sculpture as a primary subject.
Applicants will submit a proposal for a writing project that will be completed in 2027. The proposal will include a short project description (up to 50 words), a longer project description (up to 300 words), a CV, a bio (optional), and links to their website (if applicable).
Types of writing that are supported for the project include art criticism, art history, memoir, psychoanalytical study, philosophical meditation and literary study.
Applicants will submit up to three published writings from magazines, literary journals, or other publications (including online). Research or manuscripts currently in process or nearing completion, with a pending publication date, are also acceptable.
You are eligible to apply for the sculpture grant if you meet the following requirements:
- You are a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, or you hold an O-1 Visa.
- At least one example of your writing has been published within the last five years (between January 1, 2021, and the present).
