Event Details

The Galley Beggar Press Short Story Prize 2024/25 is open for submissions.

Entry costs £11 per story. The proceeds of the prize pay for the administration costs of the prize, and also raise essential funds for Galley Beggar Press (allowing us to continue to focus on new, ambitious and risky authors).

Each year, we the organizer aims to offer a significant number of free entries to the prize, in order to make sure that writers who would like to enter (but cannot afford to) are not excluded. This year, they are offering 200 free entries. Sponsored entries are offered on a first come, first serve basis.

This year, the directors of Galley Beggar Press will be joined by four new judges: the writers and journalists Claire Armistead, Mathilde Merouani, and Clare Pollard.

For the 2024/25 Prize there are three tiers of awards:

  • The WINNER of the 2024/25 Short Story Prize will receive a cash prize of £2500.
  • SHORTLISTED authors will each be awarded a cash prize of £200.
  • Each LONGLISTED author will receive £50 of bookshop vouchers, plus a 4-book subscription to Galley Beggar Press.

We are keen to encourage quality, so suggest writers to check their stories before submitting using Prowritingaid. They have free and paid versions and are the best writing software we know to help improve grammar, readability and check for repetition, ‘sticky’ sentences and suggest alternatives.
