Event Details
The Prairie Schooner Summer Creative Nonfiction Contest is organised by Prairie Schooner, a long-established literary journal based at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in the United States. The contest invites writers to submit original creative nonfiction essays written in English. Submissions must be previously unpublished, and simultaneous submissions are typically allowed, provided the author notifies the journal if the work is accepted elsewhere. This year’s guest judge is Orenda Fink, author of The Witch’s Daughter.
There is no specific theme, allowing entrants to explore a wide range of subjects and styles within creative nonfiction. The competition is open internationally, and entries are judged by editorial staff and guest judges associated with the magazine. Winning and selected entries are considered for publication in Prairie Schooner, offering significant exposure in a respected literary journal.
Submissions to the 2026 Summer Creative Nonfiction Contest open May 15 2026.
Top prize: $1,000 and publication in Prairie Schooner.
