Not Quite Write Prize for Flash Fiction

The Not Quite Write Prize for Flash Fiction is a quarterly flash fiction competition hosted by the Not Quite Write podcast. The competition is judged by podcast hosts Ed and Amanda. Rounds take place in January, April, July and October. The competition is open to writers of all experience levels worldwide.

At the start of each round, two sets of prompts are released under the headings “Team Ed” and “Team Amanda.” Entrants choose one team and write a story that addresses all three of its prompts: a word that must appear in the story, an action that must feature, and a varying challenge called the “Kicker.” Entrants then have 60 hours to write and submit a story of up to 500 words.

Stories must be original and written specifically for the competition. Entries must be written substantially in English.

The winner receives AU$1,500 and the Not Quite Write Trophy. Cash prizes are awarded to the top six stories, and wildcard prizes of AU$100 are also given. All shortlisted stories are read on the podcast, published on the Not Quite Write website, and included in the Not Quite Write Prize anthology in print and eBook.

Each ticket includes access to an online community for entrants. Optional paid upgrades include written critique, coaching sessions and on-air feedback.

The next round opens at midday on Friday 23 October 2026 AEDT (Sydney time). The deadline is 11:59pm on Sunday 25 October 2026 AEDT.
