Event Details
The M.F.K. Fisher Emerging Writers Contest is organised by the M.F.K. Fisher Foundation, a U.S. nonprofit dedicated to preserving the legacy of influential food writer M.F.K. Fisher and encouraging new voices in writing.
This year’s invites emerging writers to submit original work inspired by a specific theme; the 2026 theme is “Fire.” From the glow of candlelight, the warmth of the kitchen stove, the rage of romantic passions, and the devastation and renewal of flames in the wild, fire is elemental to our existence. What fire means to us, in practical and metaphorical terms, inspires this year’s challenge.
The contest is open to writers of all ages and backgrounds worldwide, with categories for Adults, Youth, and Children. Submissions may explore the theme creatively across styles such as memoir, reflection, speculative writing, or other literary approaches connected to nature, food, culture, and the human relationship with the natural world. The competition has attracted entries from many countries and is now in its seventh year.
Writers are invited to submit an original unpublished essay or short story (poetry not accepted) in PDF format, 300–500 words for children and youth, 750 words maximum for adults 18 and older.
Winning entries are selected by a panel of judges associated with the foundation and its literary partners, and past contests have drawn diverse interpretations of the annual theme, ranging from personal essays to imaginative and poetic prose.
Prizes include:
- $250 awarded to the first place winner in each category
- An additional $250.00 awarded to the grand prize winner
- First, second and third place submissions (and their authors’ names) in each category will be published on the M.F.K. Fisher Foundation website.
