John Glassco Translation Prize

The John Glassco Translation Prize is an annual award presented by the Literary Translators’ Association of Canada (LTAC/ATTLC) to recognize an emerging literary translator’s first book-length translation. It has been awarded every year since 1982, with the 2026 edition marking its 42nd year. The prize is named after John Glassco, a Canadian writer and translator known for his English translation of the journals and poems of Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau.

The prize is open only to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Eligible entries are a translator’s, or co-translators’, first book-length published translation, issued by a recognized publishing house between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026. Self-published books and titles available only in digital format are not eligible. The original text can be in any language, but the translation itself must be in French or English.

Eligible genres include novels, short stories, novellas, plays, poetry, biographies, essays, children’s literature, and graphic novels; manuals, textbooks, dictionaries, glossaries. Academic works are excluded. Submissions may be made by the publisher, the translator, or any other party, and must include four copies of both the original work and the translation.

The winner receives a cheque for CAD $1,500 and a one-year LTAC membership. Finalists are informed in October 2026. The prize is presented in the fall, around the celebration of St. Jerome, the patron saint of translators.
