The Grateful American Book Prize is an annual award recognising exceptional historical fiction and nonfiction for children and young adults that highlights important moments and figures in American history. Founded by author and philanthropist David Bruce Smith, the prize aims to encourage young readers to engage more deeply with the nation’s past.
The competition is open to U.S.-published authors of books for readers aged approximately 11–15 (middle-grade and early teen). Eligible books must be published within the specified award year by a recognised publisher.
Books published between August 1, 2025, and July 31, 2026, are eligible. Self-published books do not qualify.
The Prize consists of a $13,000 award in commemoration of the 13 original Colonies, and a lifetime membership to The New York Historical. In addition, the winner receives a silver medallion designed by Smith’s mother, the renowned artist, Clarice Smith. The two “Honorable Mentions” get $500 each and the silver medallion.
