The First Chapter Novel and Memoir Contest is organized by Off Topic Publishing, a small publisher and community of writers and readers run by Marion Lougheed. The organizer is looking for first chapters of novels or memoirs for work that is unpublished or self-published only.
All genres are welcome. The event is open to to writers worldwide. The novel or memoir does not need to be finished yet. It’ll need to be finished by the time the winner is announced, so it’s ready for a manuscript critique. Entries must be written in English.
The First-Place Winner in each category (Novel or Memoir) will receive $100 CAD, a free ticket to the Off Topic Writers’ Conference (valued at $120) and a Full Manuscript Critique from our founding editor and contest judge Marion Lougheed (valued at around $1200). The critique will be for a manuscript of up to 140,000 words.
Shortlisters will receive a free ticket to the Off Topic Writers’ Conference (valued at $120) and 40% off one manuscript critique or developmental edit on any project.
Longlisters will receive a free ticket to the Off Topic Writers’ Conference (valued at $120) and 25% off one manuscript critique or developmental edit on any project.
