Chalk Circle Short Story Competition

The Chalk Circle Short Story Competition is run by Chalk Circle Writers. The 2026 edition introduces a new circular flash fiction category, The 360, alongside the existing Chalk Circle 1500 category. The 360 asks writers to produce a piece of circular flash fiction that “turns 360 degrees,” ending where it began, drawing inspiration from the Ouroboros symbol of self-reflection, renewal, and cyclical creation.

Entries for the 1500 category must not exceed 1,500 words, and entries for the 360 category must be exactly 360 words, both excluding title, headers, and footers. Entries must be prose fiction only, on any subject, in any genre except children’s fiction, written in English, and previously unpublished. The competition is open to anyone in the world aged 18 or over, except present or past members of Chalk Circle Writers.

Payment is made via the organiser’s online shop using a promo code. Winners are notified in November 2026 and announced on the Chalk Circle website. Copyright remains with the author. Winning entries may be published on the Chalk Circle website, though publication is not guaranteed.
