The Waterston Desert Writing Prize is organised by High Desert Museum, a nonprofit cultural institution in Bend, Oregon, USA. Established in 2014 and inspired by author and poet Ellen Waterston’s deep connection to desert landscapes, the prize celebrates excellence in literary creative nonfiction that illustrates artistic sensitivity to place and “desert literacy,” with deserts as both subject and setting.
Submissions must be written in English and focus on nonfiction that reflects thoughtful engagement with deserts and their ecosystems. Entrants submit a project proposal, a biographical statement, and a writing sample of up to 10 pages; the sample may be published or unpublished prose relevant to the proposed book-length project. Works outside nonfiction (such as poetry or fiction) are not eligible.
The competition is international, open to emerging, mid-career, and established writers of any nationality who demonstrate a strong literary voice and connection to desert subject matter. Winners are selected by an advisory committee and guest judge, and are invited to read and participate in a reception at the High Desert Museum.
The top prize includes a $3,000 cash award and support for travel and lodging to attend an award ceremony and public reading at the museum in Bend, Oregon. Finalists may also receive recognition and opportunities for broader exposure.
Is this competition legit?YES! – Based on our research this event is legitimate and the organizer is well established. However, as with any event, please remember to do your own research before submitting your work.
