The Rhys Davies Short Story Competition 2026 is organised by Swansea University Cultural Institute on behalf of The Rhys Davies Trust in association with Parthian Books. Established in 1991, this long-running national short fiction contest recognises the very best unpublished short stories in English by writers with strong Welsh connections.
The competition accepts original, previously unpublished short stories in English on any subject or style, up to a maximum of 5,000 words. Stories must not have been published in print or online, including personal blogs or social media. Entrants must be aged 18 or over by the closing date and must have been born in Wales or currently living in Wales at the time of entry.
The 2026 competition is judged by guest judges appointed by the Cultural Institute and entries are read anonymously. Winning and shortlisted stories are published in a forthcoming short story anthology by Parthian Books, providing contributors with a pathway to broader readership.
Prizes:
- 1st Prize – £1,000 sterling and publication in a short story anthology to be published by Parthian Books in 2026.
- Runners-up/Finalist Prizes – £100 each and publication in a short story anthology to be published by Parthian Books in 2026.
