The Afritondo Short Story Prize celebrates outstanding fiction from Black and African writers worldwide. Each year, the prize invites entries that creatively address a chosen theme, showcasing fresh perspectives and imaginative storytelling.
Submissions are open to all writers with African or Black heritage.
This year’s theme is “transition”. Stories must be written in English and between 3,000 to 5,000 words. Submissions must be in English.
The 2026 short story prize will be judged by Pete Kalu, Yvette Lisa Ndlovu, and Fayssal Bensalah.
The winning writer receives $1,000, four finalists receive $100 each, and the entire longlist will be published in Afritondo’s global anthology. The winner will be expected to take part in publicity activities, including social media, where possible.
