Okay Donkey is an independent online literary magazine that has been publishing since 2018, specialising in the odd, the off-kilter, and the weird. The journal publishes flash fiction and poetry exclusively, with a strong preference for experimental, surreal, magical realist, and genre-bending work — writing that is funny, sad, or somehow both at once. It has built a reputation as a home for strange, imaginative, and formally adventurous short work, and draws comparisons to the aesthetic sensibilities of writers like Lydia Davis, George Saunders, Russell Edson, Carmen Maria Machado, and Amy Hempel. The journal publishes one new piece each Friday, alternating between flash fiction and poetry, and maintains an active community through a monthly newsletter and Discord server. Okay Donkey has a strong commitment to anti-racist values and actively seeks to amplify BIPOC and other marginalised voices.
The journal became a paying market in January 2024, offering a $20 honorarium per accepted piece. Free submissions open on the first of each month (excluding December) via Submittable and close when the cap is reached; expedited response options are also available. Flash fiction submissions must be 1,200 words or under (including sets of 2–4 micros), and poetry submissions are limited to one poem per submission period, ideally fitting on a single page. Previously published work is not accepted, nor are flash nonfiction, multiple submissions, or anonymous work. Simultaneous submissions are welcome with prompt notification. The typical response time is two to three months.
