Maudlin House is a Chicago-based independent online literary magazine and small press founded by Mallory Smart, serving as a bridge between experimental fiction and new form literature filtered through the lens of 21st-century indie and pop culture. The publication has built a devoted international readership for its commitment to weird, transgressive, absurdist, and minimalist writing, and operates both as a rolling online journal — publishing fiction, flash fiction, poetry, reviews, interviews, columns, and original comics — and as a small press releasing novels and short story collections. It is known for its irreverent personality, its championing of both emerging and established voices, and its strong ties to the indie lit underground.
Maudlin House accepts unsolicited submissions of flash fiction, poetry, and fiction via Submittable, with no payment currently offered beyond the publication credit. Previously published work is not accepted, and this includes anything posted publicly online — blogs and social media included. Simultaneous submissions are welcome with prompt notification if accepted elsewhere. Only one piece should be submitted at a time, with a short wait between submissions. The editors aim to respond within four weeks and do not issue silent rejections. First publication rights are acquired for 30 days after publication, after which all rights revert to the author.
