Event Details

The Academy for Teachers’ Stories Out of School flash-fiction contest, in partnership with A Public Space, is now accepting submissions! The deadline to submit a story is September 1, 2021. Any adult over the age of eighteen (whether a teacher or not) is welcome to submit. First prize is $1000 and publication in the print edition of A Public Space. Runners-up will receive a subscription to A Public Space.

The contest judge, Julia Alvarez, is the author of many novels, including How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents and In the Time of the Butterflies, as well as collections of poetry. Her many awards include the Pura Belpré and Américas Awards for her books for young readers, the Hispanic Heritage Award, and the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award. In 2013, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Obama.

Submission Guidelines
The story’s protagonist, or its narrator, must be a K–12 teacher. Stories must be between six and 749 words, not a preposition more nor less. Only one submission per writer. Sentimentality is discouraged and education jargon is forbidden.

Winners will be announced in January 2022.
