We are delighted to launch our latest competition, focused on the YA (Young Adult) market. This is (more or less) the age range between 12 and 18 years old and which has proliferated over the past few decades, drawing in a huge number of young readers hungry for books.
Examples include Harry Potter (obviously) as well as The Hunger Games, Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, the Divergent series and my youngest daughter’s favourite, the Skulduggery Pleasant series. There’s a strong presence of fantasy and/or dystopia in a lot of YA books, pushing at the reader’s imagination and taking them beyond the drudge of school and potential alienation amongst classmates.
So we’d like you to come up with a new interpretation of a fairy tale. It can be loosely based around various fairy tale tropes or it can be a freaky re-telling of a well-known story with just a few bizarre changes. Let your teenage imagination run wild and see where we go.
Our judge is Gareth Baker, an author of children’s books and a Patron of Reading. He has a produced two Time Guardians books, Rogue Racer and a Mayan adventure called The Chamber.
Deadline is midnight on Wednesday 19th October and stories must be between 1500-2500 words. Full details are on our Competitions page. Good luck!
